Millions of tourists come to Los Angeles to see it, the famous, iconic Hollywood sign.
Alas, over the Valentine's Day weekend, the landmark was covered up by the letters "Save The Peak". The San Francisco-based Trust For Public Land, supported by L.A. City Councilman Tom LaBonge, decided to raise awareness for their fund-raising efforts. They need 12.5 million dollars to buy the 138 acre Cahuenga Peak land adjacent to the Hollywood sign to prevent construction of mega mansions that could block the view. Deadline for the real estate deal: April 15th, 2010.
While locals are anxious to preserve their tourist attraction, affected tourists this weekend were upset! While the weather was great, warm, sunny and clear, the letters were covered.
I spoke to a group from the United Kingdom to get their reactions.
Caroline Cox: "Well, we came a long way to see this and many students in our group will probably not get a chance to come back. We are very disappointed. Yes, we do understand the cause and the issues here but I think they could have attracted attention without taking the sign away. Why did they not put the Save The Peak sign around the Hollywood sign? It would have made the point without taking the attraction away from visitors. We are upset!"
An unidentified local hiker felt the same way: "It is packed here today and all these people came to see the sign. The Trust should have had a better idea!"
Well, rest assured, the cover-up is coming off today so by February 17th the famous sign will be visible again. Raising a few million among Hollywood honchos should be easy.
